Midterm Reflection
Throughout the semester, we have focused a few writings on different forms of media that caught our attention. During class we also explored a few readings based on the different ways that certain media is used to express different messages. Also, we watched numerous YouTube videos that showed different audio and visual connections such as the Simpson’s video from a previous student work. I believe that these different forms of visuals and readings helped me gather new information to help me better understand the background and purpose behind certain forms of media.
In my first writing discussion I talked about a hunter that I look up to who attempts to relay the true meaning behind hunting. Within his posts on Instagram, he tries to incorporate his “HIIT” metaphor which stands for “Honor, Integrity, Instinct, and Tradition.” Each of these different values provide a basis for what the true meaning of hunting is and how we can connect it to our everyday lives.
Throughout this class I have learned a lot of background the relates to different forms of media and the uses of them. I have made a consistent effort to engage in the different readings, assignments, and class discussions throughout the semester thus far. Although my first writing did not meet the required length, I feel as though I had a deep conversation with Dr King on how to improve and dig deeper into the research and maybe add some more small details relating to the posts. I have spent a lot of free time reading, researching, brainstorming, and outlining these different assignments. My participation in class is very attentive, however I feel that my findings and feelings that pertain to class discussions are very similar to my peers, so I am mainly in agreement with them. I have benefitted most from the visual learning exercises we have done in class such as analyzing different YouTube videos. Also, I feel as though I benefitted most from the first writing assignment where I wrote about “HIITing the Dream.” I believe that this helped me specifically because it relates to me and my everyday life. I would describe my learning during the half of the semester as strong throughout each category. I believe that my creativity and imagination may be higher than the other categories along with use of prior and emerging experiences as explained by connection to the HIIT metaphor throughout my hunting career. One that I feel is lacking is my confidence and independence as I explained to Dr King when I sort of got stuck on the Digital Literacy assignment and needed some pointers on how to improve my writing. Overall, I feel as though I deserve at least a B in this class thus far. I feel like I am making a strong effort to better my understanding and improve my reasoning behind analysis of different medias. I also feel as though I have learned a lot that will help me in the future of writing and how to properly set up different means of media and writing uses. I have also attended all classes other than those I missed for golf tournaments.
